Beautiful Work

Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands…. Psalm 90:17a

Our heart as WHAMs July 15, 2008

The term WHAM stands for “wife, homemaker and mother.” Our desire in writing this blog is simply to encourage other women by sharing practical resources that have helped us as whams. Single women or married women without children are also welcome to this blog; even without children or a husband, one of your many callings is to be a homemaker!  Being a wham looks different in each woman’s life depending on your stage in life and your personality. Consequently, we have found that it is helpful to realize that whams do things differently in many areas and that’s why there are four of us. We’re hoping that you will relate to at least one of us and be positively challenged by the others who differ from you. Generally, you will find one topic a week on Beautiful Work and then the four of us whams, with our different personalities and gifts will weigh in on that topic. We hope that you find this blog to be a helpful resource and encouragement as you navigate the unique path God has laid out for you.

Hello, not a reply. A outreach for ideas. My wife and I just put an offer in on a house and the sellers accepted our bid. We are waiting for the bank and all the connected items to be finished. Just to give you an idea of what we are facing. We currently live in a 950 square foot apartment. The house we are buying is 912 square feet. The room we are going to use as the bedroom is 9′ 8″ by 9′. We sleep on a full size bed that is 5′ wide and 6 plus feet long. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for dressers, lamp, or much of anything else. There are literally no closets. Well actually a little 18″ by 18″ enclosure in the room. The second bedroom will be the dining room/computer room which has a tiny storage closet under the stairway to the attic. The living room is of pretty good size. It is mainly the tiny bedroom and lack of closet space that concerns us. How do we make it work for us and how would you suggest we find closet space. The kitchen is small but we can handle that. Space for storage in attic and not much more unless we raise the roof. Any ideas you can send our way will be greatly appreciated. Thak you for your response. GOD Bless you, Allan Miller

Thanks for writing! We are certainly no experts, but have all lived in tiny places, too.
First, here are our posts on living in small spaces, just in case you have not seen them. Also, I would highly recommend walking around an Ikea or looking on their website for ideas. They have very creative storage ideas, like lining the upper part of hallways with shelving/attractive storage boxes. I would definitely be putting shelving in that 18×18 space to use it more efficiently. Perhaps you could put your lighting on the walls and some nice looking shelves on either side of the bed rather than on a bedside table. I think that under bed rolling box storage would be a necessity in your bedroom. Also, where you have storage, use it, even if it doesn’t “match” the room, if you will. My storage spaces usually have a variety of unrelated items all organized together (like the buffet in my post). Perhaps it would be helpful to do something like purchase a wardrobe that is a nice looking piece of furniture, but has lots of storage space that can be hidden behind the doors. Hope this helps!
