Beautiful Work

Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands…. Psalm 90:17a

Thanksgiving Tradition November 13, 2008

I’ve realized that we have a serious lack of Thanksgiving tradition here!  Our main ‘tradition’ (if you will) is going to spend Thanksgiving with Matt’s family.  The holiday season really begins for me at Thanksgiving and goes through New Year’s day.  Many families stress about trying to celebrate the holidays with all of the family that they can.  For us that wasn’t really a struggle (or option!) since my family is in So Cal and Matt’s family is in Western WA!  We still had to figure out how we would split-up the holidays with family.  Even while we were dating, I would go to celebrate Thanksgiving with Matt and his family, so that was a natural extention for us.  New Years was a big celebration for my family with going to the Rose Parade and having friends over for lunch too, so we try to make it there for that celebration.  That left us with Christmas … and we have chosen to keep that as our family celebration at home!

As I am thinking about Thanksgiving this year, I am excited about STARTING traditions for our family!  Doing hand traced turkeys, writing things that we are thankful for, or making feathers sound like a lot of fun and would be good mile markers to look back at in the future!  Sammy-3 (and maybe even Zoe-almost 2) are old enough to voice some things that they are thankful for.  I don’t know how it will work with beginning traditions at the in-laws, but I am encouraged to purpose to talk more about what God has done in our lives that we can give thanks for!

What traditions do you have as a family on (or around) Thanksgiving?  I’d love to hear how you express your thankfulness!
