Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands…. Psalm 90:17a

Life in our house during the Fall and the Spring can be a little crazy.  Lukas has been home for one weekend since the beginning of September and we have had 4 different house guests for the times when Lukas has been at home.  These are the most demanding times for Lukas’ job and can be very difficult.  It takes extreme effort on both of our parts to keep up with each other and not let the relationship slide.  It is hard to list all the things we do to actually maintain our relationship so if you have more questions just leave a comment :)  In general some ways we keep things vibrant and up to date include:

  • Regular phone conversations telling me  where he is and what he is doing.
  • He takes pictures of little things like where he is staying or some fun part of his trip.
  • Email or texting ways I think he is awesome (this is key, I want to always be thankful for him even when I have to get up and deal with throw up all by myself and it makes him feel appreciated rather than like a loser for not being there to help me)
  • Amazing friends who babysit our children so we can talk when he gets back
  • Knowing his schedule and when to pray specific things throughout the day
  • Stopping our day and praying for Lukas and always praying for him before every meal and bedtime
  • We have found that it really helps me if we spend time together before he leaves, like planning either a date night out or in to really talk
  • fighting to always want to hear about what he is going through and striving for a genuine interest in his work
  • not planning too much activity when he is gone so that I am not totally wasted by the time he gets home (When Lukas goes on trips he has a lot going on and it is not helpful if he comes back to a totally exhausted wife so while it may be tempting to fill the days with activity and catch up with people in the evening it is not always such a good idea)
  • working out so that I can keep up with 4 kids :)
